You can expect therapy from the heart.  That magical moment when communication happens- when you take the time to think about all that goes into expressing just one word- you realize how important it is.  PoW wants those moments to be a way of life, not a miracle.
ABOUT PoW
Play on Words (PoW) Therapy was established in 2016 and became an LLC in January 2017, serving families mainly in the Hyattsville, MD and surrounding Washington DC metropolitan area (PG County, DC, and selected parts of Montgomery County).   We started serving just one family in the home setting and grew from there! While PoW works with children of all ages and needs, we specialize in working with younger children with significant impairments (nonverbal communicators, limited language, language delay, autism, intellectual disability, etc.)  PoW also has extensive training in working with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).

If you have any questions about your child's development and/or would like to know how PoW can help, please contact us!

Christina has over six years of experience serving adults with disabilties in group home settings/day programs as well as three years in skilled nursing facilities.  Each of these experiences have shaped her into the therapist she is today.

"From the moment I was old enough to work or even volunteer, it has been with children with special needs.  I did adapted sports programs, respite care, mentoring, and Special Olympics work.  I owe it all to my late brother, who had cerebral palsy.  I always knew my passion was to help children like him.  When choosing a college major I never asked, 'What do I want to be when I grow up?' Instead, the only question was, 'What kind of therapist do I want to be?'"

“• SENSORY FOOTPATH •
A few weeks ago I saw this awesome idea for a sensory footpath on @everydayplayhacks who reposted the idea from @exploreplaylearn 🙌🏻 and I’ve had it in the back of my mind to try ever since! ...
Everything I used we already had in the house - I used some material scraps (a sheepskin/wool one and a mermaid tail/smooth one), some pearl barley in a zip lock bag, some bubble wrap, some Pom Poms in a zip lock bag, and some stickle puffs in a zip lock bag (they were from Kmart) and I stuck it all on the floor with painters tape. If you’re going to try it, make sure you push all the air out of the zip lock bags before taping them down, otherwise they will pop when walked on! .
Not only was this a great sensory activity, but it’s wonderful for language development as well, as it encourages conversations describing the textures of the different parts of the path!”

  5. 🙋🏽‍♀️I agree! .

We all use AAC when we “talk” with our hands, point to items/pictures, write, type, text...the list goes on! Trying AAC isn’t “giving up” on verbal speech; it’s additional support to encourage communication!

Verdict: Still in.

I love matching cards because we can use and learn so many descriptors! If a child has mastered the art of naming differences, I step it up a notch and have them find something the ‘same’ about non-matches! .

“🔅My advice🔅: have a small, obtainable goal in mind and chose a strategy to best reach that particular goal. Be consistent. Reflect on what that strategy taught you and what the results were ⚡️. Expand on successful strategies... e.g., “wow, when I used choices, X was really intentional in choosing their snack, I’m going to start offering choices with toys...” 🔅Make tweaks and implement new ones as you learn what works for you and your child...🔅 .
Examples:
.
. ⭐️Sabotage: don’t open that juice box for them! Give it to them and create a REQUESTING OPPORTUNITY 💥 .
⭐️WAIT. I’m gonna say it again 🗣... W A I T. I had to teach myself this one, but when we actually give the child TIME to respond, magical things happen. We are always talking, rushing, going, saying, doing. Model your word, take a step back and count to 5 in your head. .
. ⭐️Make comments: teach them thru talking. Instead of always asking and “testing”, tell them. Give them the language. Try, “that’s a waffle” instead of “what’s that?” When they hear the word and maybe see it, they are learning; there’s no verbal pressure and there’s a higher likelihood of independent use in the future.”

  8. Another @targetsdollarspot find from yesterday!
I’m so excited to try out these placemats to target some expressive and receptive language goals-oh, the possibilities!
Just to name a few: .
✔️I Spy: “I spy something that plays music” .
✔️Answering/asking WH-questions: “Where is the giraffe?” .
✔️Identifying items: “Which one is red with a ladder?” .
✔️Labeling: “It’s a whale” .
✔️Using a carrier phrase: “I see a...” .
✔️Prepositions: “The panda is under the fox” .
.
These mats are durable, waterproof 🙌🏽, have activities on the back, and...wait for it...$1! .

  13. Playing with Core Words #5!
The infamous ball popper- a staple in my therapy bag! I love ball poppers because they’re: cheap 💲, reinforcing 🙌🏽, and they elicit so much language 🗣! With a ball popper, you can build those joint attention skills that then turn into requesting, commenting, prepositions, and turn-taking! See some of the core words/phrases below! If you haven’t noticed, lots of these core words and phrases are consistent across the toys, and that’s the whole point! We use core 24/7 🤗
This core board is an adaptation from Gail Van Tatenhove’s Pixon 50 using PCS, by Indian River Schools. There are lots of core board examples you can find online-see which one works for you! Here are some core words/phrases to target while playing with a ball popper: -I do it .
-put that there
.
-stop
.
-I want turn
.
-ready .
-you do more
.
-give me
.
-I want play
.
-it go away
.
-where go?
.
-don’t put there
.
-I like/don’t like
.
-again . -get it
.
-help me
.
-look there
Can you think of some other core words/phrases? .

  14. Sunday Snow Day!
It’s snowing here in the DC area and it’s nice to have some forced relaxation 🙃

These puffy paint polar bears are so easy to make- one of my favorite winter crafts! It’s 2 parts shaving cream and 1 part @elmersproducts glue (some also add 1 part flour as well). Mix until it’s fluffy and easy to spread.
We spread the paper plates with the paint and then put on black circles for the eyes, a pom pom for the nose, and cotton rounds for the ears!
Lots of:
✔️Requesting (I want nose, Can I have the glue?) .
✔️Describing (White bear, The plate is round) .
✔️Commenting (Sticky!, I like this pom pom) .
✔️Prepositions/Following directions (Put on, The nose goes below the eyes) .
.
.
What are some of your favorite snowy crafts/activities? ❄️

  16. Sometime last year (as in earlier in the year, not 2 weeks ago 🙃) I found this road tape at Target. I bought a couple rolls, but not enough!
My friend designed this road with some curves and bridges- all I had to do was the cutting (he told me when-targeting /k/ 😏). The road tape has little 🏁 flags every 1.5 ft or so, and that’s where we paused to work on a speech target! Easy peasy!

  24. This is one of my favorite visuals!
It helps to remind us of all the ways we use communication. Think about your typical day- most of the time we’re not walking around saying, “I want __ please” or labeling random objects. Personally, I spend a lot of time sharing experiences/thoughts/ideas/factual info 🤓,commenting 🗣, expressing physical states 😴, and directing others’ actions 😏. I reflect back on my first year or two as a(n) SLP and I wasn’t focusing on FUNCTIONAL COMMUNICATION!
Now I’m constantly asking myself how a child or adult would use this skill in the classroom, in the home, in the day program, in the community, etc.
Thank you to Alicia Garcia for this graphic!

  25. Playing with Core Words #4!
Play food is an all-time classic. You can find it anywhere and even better when it’s cut-able 😏 So interactive! Not only can you use play food to work on actions, vocabulary, colors, sequencing, and following directions (hint: following a recipe), but you are also targeting core words! If you haven’t noticed yet, lots of these core words and phrases are consistent across the toys, and that’s the whole point! We use core 24/7 🤗 .

This core board is an adaptation from Gail Van Tatenhove’s Pixon 50 using PCS, by Indian River Schools. There are lots of core board examples you can find online-see which one works for you! . Here are some core words/phrases to target while playing with food: .
-I do it .

-make more .

  32. Giveaway time! The Action Word Mat & Playing Cards set is probably my favorite item in @puhtuhkuh_kelly ‘s entire store! I love all things language, and there is just that much to do with this pack. I’ve printed out so many of these resources to send home for practice, that I barely had enough to show you! It’s also the perfect time of year to use the mats with Don’t Break the Ice- the ice cubes fit perfectly in the boxes! I decided to change it up and use these Lego-like blocks from @target! Once the child says the action or gives me a description of the picture, then we can add to the tower. Some of the other amazing resources in here are: . -who questions 🤗
. -story telling visual cue 📖
. -act it out cards 💃🏽
. -name it/label it 🍩
. -conversation starters 🗣
. -past tense 📅
. -yes/no 👍🏽
.
.
Finally, I wanted to note that the playing mats can be used in a million ways- bingo, cut/paste matching (did this with one of my adult ASD clients today!), Play-doh smash mat, or use a dry erase marker to X-out! The list goes on. .
Now do you see why this is my favorite?! .
